What is nutritional coaching?

This is a new and emerging concept in India. Nutrition is an ever changing science and only recently did we realize the importance of food in our daily life. It’s not just the food we eat but also the way we cook it, the way we combine ingredients and the way we process food that impacts heavily on our health. In addition, certain customs and lifestyle practices do not allow us to change to a healthier way of eating. Nutritional coaching includes:

Why do we need nutritional coaching?

Nutrition as a science is still evolving and emerging. What we thought was true 20 years ago is not necessarily so. Unfortunately, most health care providers are unaware of the latest developments in nutrition and are unable to provide with the proper dietary advice. Additionally, just knowing what to eat and what not to eat is not enough to keep oneself motivated. We need constant support, motivation and the right cooking techniques so that we can get optimal nutrition without compromising on taste. Nutritional coaching does exactly that. It provides you with all the information and helps you practice that in your daily life.


Who can benefit from nutritional coaching?

I feel, probably, everyone will benefit one way or the other through nutritional coaching. We as a civilization have been eating the wrong kind of foods for decades that we need a paradigm shift in our thinking to eat better. In addition, a lot of our health problems today are lifestyle related and can be resolved to a very large extent just by changing your diet. The list is endless but to name a few:

Why does method of cooking matter so much?

Most of the nutrients in food react to heat and also with each other during the cooking process. Cooking process like steaming, blanching, roasting, soaking, and pressure cooking have different effects on the availability of nutrients. For example, folic acid is present in almost all vegetables but being heat sensitive it is generally lost in the cooking process. Eating raw or juicing or cooking the right way helps retain the folic acid in our food. Nutritional coaching provides you with cooking techniques that will enhance taste and nourishment from the food you eat.


Toddlers should eat everything. Then why do I need nutritional coaching for them?

Weaning is the best time to introduce nutrient dense food (we can provide a hyperlink here to an article about it) in toddlers. What you feed them during this time usually determines the kind of food preferences they have as children. Their food should be easy to digest, suited to their taste, nutrient dense and easy to prepare. A lot of parents struggle with feeding and do not venture beyond what they traditionally know about feeding their babies. Nutritional coaching will provide parents with ideas, cooking techniques and recipes to get through this stage. Why do I need nutritional coaching in pregnancy?

Pregnancy is a crucial time when you have to eat nutrient dense foods to obtain optimal nourishment. The baby will take whatever it needs from the mother and if the mother doesn’t replenish her stores, she ends up being deficient in the whole process. Nutritional coaching in this stage is extremely important to understand what to eat and how to eat. In addition, it will also help you stay healthy and have a higher chance of a normal birth. Ideally, nutritional coaching should start before conception to get the maximum benefits.
